What information we collect

  1. The data from the app

The app collects data about your driving behaviour and that of any driver of a car you are a passenger in when the app is switched on. The app will enable data that is collected to be directly linked to your car insurance policy.

Some of the information the app collects includes: the direction you are driving, date, time, latitude, longitude and speed. This information is needed to help us determine how, when, and where you are driving your car. If we did not collect this data, we would be unable to determine your driving behaviour and therefore would be unable to offer you our telematics car insurance product.

This data is collected and stored by us or by authorised third parties on our behalf. By taking out a car insurance policy with OYD, you agree to share this personal information with us. When you contact us, you agree we may keep and use records of that communication.

The information collected and processed may include information about any person who is driving when you are a passenger, whether that be in the insured vehicle or another. We shall obtain your consent but assume that you have explained this and that other drivers do consent to OYD processing such information. This is important as the app cannot detect who is driving and all journey data will be viewed as a whole. You have the ability to delete Journeys where you were not the driver but this will not be until it appears on the app trip history.

  1. Your personal details

We’ll collect your name, address, email address, medical data and any other information that you input into the website, the app, or supply to us, to allow us to provide you with a quote.

We need to collect and process personal data about you to allow us to provide our services. We also need to disclose this information to a number of third party service providers, to assist us in providing these services to you. By using our website, you confirm your consent to such data being processed by ourselves or any third party providers we may use.

  1. Website Recording

Our web site may also use the SessionCam web site recording service. SessionCam is a product that has been developed by ServiceTick Ltd. SessionCam may record mouse clicks, mouse movements, page scrolling and any text keyed into website forms. The information collected does not include bank details or any sensitive personal data. Data collected by SessionCam from the ServiceTick website is for internal use only. The information collected is used to improve our website usability and is stored and used for aggregated and statistical reporting.

  1. Website surveys

From time to time, we may invite our website visitors to participate in an online survey about our online services. Participation is entirely optional and any information we collect is only used to improve the products and services we offer to our visitors. We do not collect any personal information as part of the surveys. These online surveys are provided by ServiceTick Ltd.

What we do with your information

The driving data recorded through the OYD app is stored on your mobile device using AE256 symmetric encryption. This data is then transmitted over the internet using a secure sockets layer (SSL) and stored in our secure data warehouse. This can only be accessed by authorised persons with special access rights.

We will use your personal information and any information you provide to us about any other named driver (submitted by you on their behalf) for the purpose of insurance administration by OYD and any other associated third parties. This includes any related administration for offering renewal, pricing, statistical purposes and fraud or crime prevention.

Any information supplied by you may be disclosed to regulatory bodies for the purposes of monitoring and/or enforcing the Insurer’s compliance with any regulatory rules or codes.

To ensure our insurers and credit providers have the necessary facts to assess your insurance risk, verify your identity, help prevent fraud and to provide you with their best premium and payment options, they may obtain information from third parties. This includes a quotation search from a credit reference agency. This search will appear on your credit report and will be visible to other providers. It will be clear that this is a quotation rather than a credit application by you to pay by monthly instalments.

Our insurers may also obtain publically available information from third parties, for the purpose of identity verification and fraud prevention, including a credit reference agency. Their search will appear as a footprint on your credit report whether or not your application proceeds, but will not adversely impact your credit history.

Our insurers will also exchange information through various databases to help check information provided and to identify potentially fraudulent claims. Specifically, Insurance Database Services Limited (IDSL) hosts the Claims and Underwriting Exchange (CUE) which holds a record of incidents reported to insurance companies by policyholders and third party claimants. Our insurers may validate the information provided by you, both about yourself and any other person named in your application, against the information held on CUE and against other databases hosted by IDSL. This may be used by our insurers to consider whether to accept the risk. For details relating to information held about you on the Claims and Underwriting Exchange please visit

Your information will also be added to the Motor Insurance Database (MID). For more information, please visit

We may only disclose personal information about you to non-associated third parties (that is, anyone not directly involved in providing our contractual services to you) in certain circumstances: in the event that we sell or buy any business or asset, in which case we may disclose your information to the prospective seller or buyer of such business or assets; if our assets (or substantially all our assets) are acquired by a third party, in which case your information held by us will be one of the transferred assets. If we are under a duty to disclose or share your information in order to comply with any obligation, or in order to enforce or apply our terms of use; or to protect our rights, property or safety, our customers or others. This includes exchanging information with other companies and organisations for the purposes of fraud protection and credit risk reduction.

Improving our service to you

We will also use the information you provide to us to conduct market research. This allows us to improve our products or services and to provide you with better customer service and to improve our Website or App.

We will hold and process your personal data for insurance administration and marketing use. We won’t give your driving information to the Police or to any civil authorities unless we have your permission, we are required to do so by law (i.e. we’ve received a Court Order) or we suspect fraud. Apart from that, we only share your personal data with our partners that need to see it in order to service and administer your car insurance policy.

By entering into a contract of insurance with us, you are consenting to such use of your personal data.

Your rights

You have the right to ask us not to process your personal information for marketing purposes. We will usually inform you (before collecting your information) if we intend on using it for these purposes.
